Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Electoral malpractice, including vote-rigging, ballot-stuffing, and other illegal activities, significantly undermines the legitimacy of political institutions and democratic processes. In Jos North LGA, Plateau State, electoral malpractice has been identified as a challenge that affects both the fairness of elections and the public’s perception of the legitimacy of the elected officials (Abubakar & Muhammad, 2023). The study aims to explore how electoral malpractice in local elections impacts the legitimacy of political authority in Jos North LGA, particularly focusing on how it erodes public trust and voter confidence. Previous studies emphasize that when elections are perceived as unfair or manipulated, it results in diminished political legitimacy, which in turn affects governance and political stability (Adamu & Yusuf, 2024). By evaluating the effects of electoral malpractice in Jos North LGA, this study will contribute to discussions on strengthening electoral processes to ensure more legitimate and democratic governance.

This study will investigate the direct and indirect effects of electoral malpractice on political legitimacy in Jos North LGA, seeking to understand how it undermines the democratic process and contributes to political disillusionment among voters.
